An integrated simulation process using ANSYS, Virtual.PYXIS, SpaceClaim, MAGMA and DesignXplorer

Topology optimization methodology has become an important trend for engineering design. It transforms an extended not defined geometry in an innovative design with minimum weight and maximum stiffness or maximum vibration frequency, promoting a reduction in the time required for engineering development design cycle. It deliveries a broad range of structural improvements including less weight, greater efficiency, better performance, reduced energy needs and overall development costs.
Many different manufacturing conditions can be applied to a new design: casting, injection molding, forging. The evolution of additive manufacturing contributes to topology optimization methodology because that procedure gives much more flexibility and new possibilities to an optimized component. Also known as 3D printing, additive manufacturing does not restrict the design when compared to standard processes like casting and injection molding.
An integrated simulation procedure has been applied to a lightweight design of an engine mount support, considering the following steps:

·         Starting from a concept
·         Topology optimization of a nonlinear static analysis
·         CAD remodeling
·         Parametric optimization for maximum stress reduction in critical regions
·         Final static validation considering the residual stress from casting simulation

Simulation in the Design Process of Truck Trailers

Simulation plays an important role in today`s competitive market for any product design
process, for the truck trailer industry it is not different.
In this industry competitiveness comes mainly from increase in deliverable payload and reduction
of fuel-consumed by means of light-weight design. Keeping the structure reliable,
rigid, easy to manufacture and easy to repair are also important goals that sometimes must
be compromised during the design process. Moreover all safety and technical requirements
must be achieved, introducing some constraints that most of times make even more difficult
to find the best design for an application.
Put all of this together then designers and engineers will have hundreds or thousands of
possibilities to evaluate and test making the search for the best design expensive or even
impracticable.
To help designers and engineers to overcome this challenge Virtual.PYXIS offers a variety
of simulation tools that can be integrated to efficiently eliminate bad designs earliest in the
process and speed up all the phases of trailers design.

TruckSim
• Vehicle Dynamics Analysis.
• Predict compliance with dynamic safety requirements or standards.
Simulate dynamic behavior of different truck and trailers combinations or
different designs for suspensions, tires and chassis.
TruckSim is a tool to simulate the dynamic behavior of the entire truck on
the road and to measure all forces and movements related. It has been successfully
used to predict rollover threshold, lateral stability, maneuverability,
acceleration, brake distance, fuel-consumption, rolling resistance, ride quality
and to achieve data for future structural analysis, e. g., get the loads on
the tire contact patch and apply them in a FE structural model using ANSYS.

ANSYS
• Structural and Fluid Dynamics Analysis.
• Predict stress and deformation of the chassis, suspension, brake or any
component of the Trailer.
• Analyze the aerodynamics of the chassis body.
ANSYS together with ANSYS Workbench are a set of tools to perform structural
and fluid dynamics analysis based on the Finite Element Method (FEM)
and the Finite Volume Method (FVM). It has been broadly used by many
industries to perform from simple linear structural analysis with well-known
materials to highly complex multi-physics models involving composites materials,
thermal and heat transfer, fluid-structure interaction, magnetic fields,
fatigue, fracture, multiphase and non-linear contacts. Using the power of
the FEM from ANSYS with Topology Optimization methods from Virtual.
PYXIS leads to a unique easy and direct way to find the best design for a
component “automagically”.

Virtual.PYXIS
• Topology Optimization of Mechanical Structures.
• Find the best design of a component for you application directly and
with clear view of compromises assumed.
• Minimize weight but keep the ease of manufacture by applying manufacture
constraints to your design based on your actual manufacture
process.
Virtual.PYXIS is the key tool for light-weight design process automation,
intended to perform Topology Optimization of mechanical structures giving
the best design of a component based on its application. Topology
Optimization is used to minimize or maximize weight, volume, stiffness
or frequency values given the load conditions and the constraints of the
system, like manufacture restrictions, limits to mass, volume, compliance,
frequency band or required displacement. It is fully integrated to ANSYS
as well as others commonly used FE codes.

Virtual.PYXIS was placed in the top three winners of “Foundation Prize” award.

Every year the Hannover Impuls promotes, together to the main sponsors and partners (Sparkasse Hannover, Enercity Proklima, T3N Digital Pioneers and Radio 21) an entrepreneur competition between companies called “STARTUP-IMPULS”. This competition has 4 categories: Idea Prize, Foundation Prize, Academic Prize and Smart Energy. This year 145 companies attended the competition and, Virtual.PYXIS has award the second position in the category “Foundation Prize”. It was an honor to attend the competition, because it happens in a very high level in terms of knowledge and the business itself. Virtual.PYXIS has 2 location offices, the first one is located in Hannover at Technologie Zentrum in Wissenschaftspark and other in Chicago at University Tech Park at Illinois Institute of Technology. Virtual.PYXIS the University technology park at ITT Chicago

by DAVID BAKER, University Technology Park, IIT

This month, we’re excited to welcome Virtual.PYXIS, a Brazilian-based startup focusing on computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications for the aerospace and automotive industries. They’re just the latest company to take advantage of our International Soft Landing Program, designed to provide startups with a gateway to North American markets via Chicago.
When I’m talking with innovators from other countries, I find there’s strong interest in Chicago. Easy access via O’Hare and Midway airports, proximity to major research institutions, and our area’s high concentration of financial, legal and accounting services are all major attractors. So is the city’s high-quality workforce and the presence of burgeoning tech clusters in life sciences, energy, software, and materials.
